While translating ancient forms of ceramics into contemporary modes of living, Lee Hun-Chung's work ranges from ceramic art furniture to large-scale installations.
The results of the glazing process are unpredictable, a collaboration between artist and nature that creates a complex patina of painterly layers of glaze. The firing process in ceramics becomes a metaphor for the forces of change and transformation surrounding us that we cannot control, just like our life itself.
Inspired by poet Chong Hyon-jong's poem "Island.": "There is an island between people. I want to visit that island."
Lee explores the themes of solitude and relationships in this work titled <island>. Ceramic stools and a bench are scattered in the museum's garden, like islands floating on the sea, embracing the space between the objects as part of the installation.
