This work is a part of <Où et Quand? (Where and When?)>, the three series – Berck, Lourdes, and No Where(Nulle Part)- that Sophie Calle worked on from 2005 to 2011. Bereck and Lourdes are named after the eponymous French cities Calle visited in the wake of her mother’s death as recommended by her clairvoyant, Maud Kristen.
Calle complied with Kristen’s suggestions throughout her whole trip, and she recorded everything from the train time table, places of accommodation, people she met and the conversations with them into photographs, videos, and texts, ultimately creating three series. “People want to have their destiny revealed to them and feel comforted by the assurance that they can control their future to a certain degree,” Calle explains.
